When Carolina Blaad, the press contact at the Sjöhistoriska Maritime Museum did an interview with me (in Swedish), she asked me to describe how it was to be on board the boats. Well, I answered:

“I wanted to see how it was for the fishermen to work and live on a fishing boat. I found it fascinating, like a hidden world — unknown by us living on land. But after being with them for a while, the thought stuck me that they really love what they are doing and can hardly be without it even if conditions are very tough for many of them and often involves a lot of hard work…”

Dayboat fishing with Anker and Anki

08 02nd, 200810 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

I promised Búi, my husband, to show his photos mixed with my own shots on this blog from a fishing trip we did this summer in the Faroe Islands. I was quite impressed with some of the photos that he got even if he became a little seasick (he forgot to take the pill and it was ages since he’d been out at sea in a fishing boat) and got a lot of water drops on the lens…

So me and Búi did one trip each with the Áargarður, a combined coastal longliner and jigger registered in the fishing village of Leirvík. The boat is operated and partly owned by Anker Dýrdarklett Hansen, a longtime professional fisherman with particular experience in inshore fishing.

Successful grand opening

07 31st, 200810 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

The grand opening of the the exhibition ‘Ocean Fishing — Six Trips on the North Atlantic’ was very successful with around sixty people showing up, including the Danish ambassador in Sweden, people from the Icelandic Embassy, and Faroese people living in Sweden. The managing director of the Sjöhistoriska Maritime Museum, Hans-Lennart Ohlsson, was enthusiastic and looking forward to host the exhibition for seven months – with the opportunity to reach out to schools and the general public during the fall.

‘Images’ exhibiton kicks off in Stockholm

06 25th, 200810 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

On Friday 27th June, 2:00 pm, at the Sjöhistoriska Maritime Museum in Stockholm, it’s opening time for “Havsfiske – sex turer på Nordatlanten” (Ocean Fishing – Six Trips on the North Atlantic) which features about 30 photos from my book ‘Images of Fishermen: the North Atlantic’.

I’m quite excited because with this event as I haven’t had any exhibition before at Sjöhistoriska. What adds to the buzz is that promotional activities include posters in the Stockholm Subway – to be seen by 800,000 train riders. That’s actually 20 times the total population of the Faroes or more than twice than Iceland’s.

Iceland’s Ambassador to Sweden, Mr. Guðmundur Árni Stefánsson, is scheduled to do the inauguration of this exhibition — and this is a travelling exhibition set to be held in various Nordic locations over the next two years. The event is produced by the Sweden-Faroe Society (Samfundet Sverige-Färöarna), the Sweden-Iceland Society (Samfundet Sverige-Island) and the Nordic Cultural Fund.

Copious gets her twin sister

06 08th, 200810 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

Remember the chapter about the twin-rig trawler Copious LK 985 from Shetland in ‘Images’? Copious new sister trawler Prolific LK 986 arrived in Shetland at the end of May. Congratulations to the owners Mark Anderson, Andrew White and Steven Wilson, and the newly joined Colin Robb, who will skipper the Prolific. Both vessels were built by Parkol Marine Engineering at Whiteby, England. According to Fishing News the owners plan, after a couple of weeks of testing, to pair-seine, depending on fishing opportunities.

A ‘Cultural Night’ in Brussels

The Faroese Minister of Fisheries and Natural Resources, Tórbjörn Jacobsen with Faroese singer Lena Anderssen and music composer/producer Niclas Johannesen at a cultural evening program during the European Seafood Exposition (ESE) in Brussels. With over 1600 exhibiting companies from 87 countries, the ESE is a major event that brings together seafood buyers and sellers from all over the world. We were there to deliver, fresh from the presses, a few hundred copies of the 2008 edition of our popular Faroe Business Report .

The queen of the seas

05 24th, 200810 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

Congratulations to Hvalnes/Christian í Grótinum! Their new pelagic trawler Norðborg was launched at the Asmar shipyard in Chile in February and will be delivered later this year to replace the old Norðborg. The 84-meter ship will be the most sophisticated and versatile pelagic trawler in the world. And imagine a 2500m3 refrigerated fish room that can hold 1400 tonnes of frozen products of herring, blue whiting or mackerel. Read more about this amazing Faroese family company (see chapter Pelagic Pair Trawling with ‘Christian í Grótinum’ and ‘Norðborg’) in my book Images of Fishermen and by the way, check out the crew’s blog…

Travelling exhibition, conference underway

02 17th, 200810 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

Nanna Hermansson and Sören Hallgren (representatives from the Swedish Faroese Society) visited me last week in the Faroes. For an intensive couple of days we prepared for the coming exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Stockholm and selected 30 photos from “Images” that will show some aspects of todays fishing in the North Atlantic. The exhibition will later on travel to Copenhagen, Esbjerg, Gothenburgh, Reykjavik, Tórshavn and Nuuk. The Nordic Culture Fund is one of the main sponsors and others are expected to join in. Also, there seems to be great interest for a conference to be held in Stockholm later this year and if it will be realized we will invite representatives from the fishing industry and the scientific community to work toward increased understanding of fishing and to highlight some challenges facing consumers, the seafood trade and fishing industry. Check out for more details later…

Thanks all readers

Thanks all readers and special thanks to Nanna in Stockholm, Nathalie in Paris and Lady Elaine at the Fishermen’s Mission in Great Britain for your support, help and interest in “Images of Fishermen”. 2007 has indeed been a year with both reflections and expanded plans of our business activities so, undoubtedly, 2008 will become a very interesting year. In the pipeline: several exhibitions, starting in Sweden and then travelling further to Denmark and some other Nordic countries, to name some. Maybe I’ll see you there. Meanwhile, Happy New Year!

Arrival of new pair trawlers in Faroes

12 31st, 200710 6th, 2007 Author: Maria

Remember the photo essay in ‘Images’ about Bakur FD 1201 and Stelkur FD 1202 (see also ‘Nasty Weather’ below)? With the December arrival of the pair trawlers Heykur FD 1203 and Falkur FD 1204, Runavík based vessel operator Beta (now part of Faroe Seafood) finalized its replacement program of the old ‘Cuba Trawlers’. The new, 38.60m long identical pair trawlers were built by M Cíes in Vigo, Spain, like Bakur and Stelkur were five years ago. A couple of months ago, another pair came, Rókur FD 1205 and Lerkur FD 1206, two trawlers of similar size and engine power as the others, however these were not newbuilds but were relatively new nonetheless and refitted to match in length (38.80m) after they had been bought from their Scottish and Irish owners.
